Who is responsible for teaching kids character education? Many parents have come to rely on schools to teach this to their children, and while it is good to get reinforcement from teachers and other adult figures in their life, kids need to hear it from their parents and see examples of good character in their parents on a daily basis.
What exactly is character education? It includes these sub-traits:
- Honesty
- Compassion
- Integrity
- Respect
- Generosity
- And other traits that your family feels are important to add to character education
Good character traits are important to maintain a society of people that care about each other, will lend a hand to someone in need, and genuinely think about others feelings before acting. Character education provides the basis that kids can learn these things and soon they become a habit, a way of life, and are instilled in them through their adult lives.
You, as a parent, have a direct effect on what your child learns about good character traits. It is your family values and example that help them learn how to be good citizens.
About This Course
Some parents confuse character education with excellent performance in school. They believe that if their child is succeeding in academics, then they are becoming respectable citizens. While academics are very important, this is not what character education is all about. One's character is based on behavior and morals. It is how we react to others in any given situation, and whether or not we develop habits reflecting a pattern of civility. In other words, we must teach our children to have good character traits, because it is not something they just gather from their genes. Parents play the most important role in making sure that their child is a respectable person with good morals and values. This course teaches you ways to instill these morals and values in your child through fun activities and hands-on lesson plans.
In order to teach your child about character education, you need to know what is involved in the learning process. This course gives resources and suggestions for service projects, whereas kids learn to help others. When you do something for someone else, it makes you and the recipient feel good. There are outreach projects that you and your child can participate together in that strengthens family bonds, while showing compassion to those less fortunate around the world and in your own backyard.
The goal in character education is to raise children to become morally responsible and self-disciplined citizens. Teaching kids how to solve problems, makes decisions, and solve conflicts are a major part of developing good morals. Learn role playing techniques that can help teach your child and show them that what they do affect the people around them.
"Character education is not another thing to be added to the plate. It is the plate."
